The Mid - Autumn Festival is a celebration of abundance and togetherness. The Chinese believe in praying to the moon god for protection, family unity and good fortune. The festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar. On this day the moon is brighter, clearer and rounder than usual.
Mooncakes are eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Traditional mooncakes are round or rectangular pastries filled with a thick lotus paste. Some may contain the yolk of salted duck eggs too. Nowadays, mooncakes come in all shapes and sizes. They can also be made from different pastries and with different flavoured fillings inside.
